OP pointers 2

I would like to share with you some pointers for your OP. After the first day of OP assessment, I like to remind you how to score well for your individual components.

The scoring are in 3 areas: Clarity, Awareness of audience and Response to Question.

The total marks are 18, with a max of 6 marks for each of the above criterion. It is easy to score 11 or 10 marks for the individual components of clarity and awareness of audience. You just need to memorise your scripts, deliver your speech normally and with good pacing, do not rush through and remember to pause once a while.

Be aware of where you stand when you are delivering your speech, Move nearer to the front (nearer the audience) and remember to SMILE occasionally and give useful hand gestures.

The crucial point to note is to try to memorise your script. Do not look at your cue cards (definitely no papers on your hands- if need be use cue cards!) You could look at your cue cards once a while. Fluency is important.

So you really need to work hard to try to rehearse your own speech many many times so that you are fluent in what you going say without the need to read from the cards. Make your sentences short and easy to understand as far as possible though this is not so crucial so long it is in complete sentence.

For that you will at least score 11 or 10 or even a 12 mark for the first two criteria out of a max of 12 marks and that is an “A” grade!

For those of you who have been feeling quite upset with some of your group members over them being “absent mentally”, ie, do not follow what the active members are doing, fret not. Take heed that these people would not be able get good marks for the response to question component. This is the toughest to score so far that I have seen. If you are unaware of your projects you are unlikely to fare well for this component.

So those who feel grieved over the lack of efforts of some of your members, take solace in this. However, remember to pause a while before taking on the question, but don’t look puzzled by the question. Take your time to give an evaluated or elaborated answer that is relevant to the question.

I need to repeat this: many of us still need to practise a lot more from the last time I saw your delivery. Please do so and don’t appear distraught, but look confident. All the best on Fri!"

hello! class please take this survey for your views to be heard.
do not take the survey twice because i have set a limit to the number of responses to be reflected; by doing the survey more than once you will be taking up your classmates' chances to do the survey. :D

A password has been set (to avoid spammage from unrelated parties) so please get it from other A12 ppl or me if you do not have it yet (only those who have done the survey will be likely to know it).
thank you!

Poll on Econs Tutorial

A12:

Pursuant to what li long's post regarding econs time tabling for next year, I would like to provide some more details and some clarification.

Firstly, our class will be split into two for econs tutorials for the reasons as cited by li long. This is to faciliate more time for individuals to participate and ask during classroom tutorials as I have noticed that some of you are not able to do so this year because the class size is just too big along with the 1-hour per period constraint, which is not long enough to faciliate a good discussion. The opportunity cost is just too high, To me, a class size of 15-18 is ideal with smaller classes even better. Hence, with a size of 28, this may be far from ideal.

This is the reason for the split. The idea is not entirely my own, the school also thinks likewise and in fact, it is the school management that has decided on the split to 2 smaller groups and I concur with it. Henceforth, there would be two groups of 16 and 12. The split is based on the overall results with the latter group might be smaller because some of you might wish to drop to H1 econs next year.

In fact, it is not just our class that will be split; 07a13 likewise would be re-grouped into two for next year's tutorials as well as some other classes. However, the split is just for econs tutorials. I will remain as your CT and the 29 of us will move together in the same class for year 2.

Now, the problem comes with time-tabling. The time tabling committee would still consider 07A12 as a single class, as the split is only for econs tutorials. This would mean that I cannot be at two groups at the same time (you would have seen this in your math tutorials this year- there would be two teachers for each of the group).

As I do not wish to pass on the not so strong group to another teacher, ie, I would take this smaller group. The other bigger group would go to another teacher. The teacher would not be mdm fok but mdm yeoh, another teacher whom you all may not have known too well because she did not lecture in our group this year.

So, the poll is this: do you wish to continue with me for the both groups? If yes, then the drawback would be your time table would be stretched longer, ie, you may have lessons that stretched later into the latter part of the day, ie, you would have a longer lesson schedule. I am sure you could envisage that, because the arrangement will mean that when we are having a tutorial for one group, the other will have a break, and vice versa.

If you give me a overwhelming response that you all do not mind, then this gives me the impetus to ask the time tabling to do the necessary adjustment.

However, I could not promise that our request will be met. The time tabling committee might think that it is not wise to do so. Meanwhile, I was aready told that I would be taking 07A13 for econs tutorial. However, I would try to ask for a swap if you all are agreeable to having continuity, hence how strong your views on this would give me an indication of how strong should we pursue with the time tabling committee. Please voice your opinions in this blog as I could read and transparent to all.

Cheers!

NB- I have booked the comp lab E306 for OP pracitces for Monday 29 Oct from 9.30 onwards.

mr leong, would it be very tiring for you if you took both groups?

------ By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 28, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Yes, as much as your time table would be stretched longer, mine would also likewise be longer. However, I am prepared for that and wouldn't be too taxing on me, thanks for being so considerate.

However, it seems that the response is about equal as seen from the poll, hence, I will leave it to the time tabling committee to decide what they think is the best for us.

Anyway if you could please show your name so that we could know whose opinion is that instead of being in anonymity. Thanks.

oh, sorry mr leong, i was the one who posted the comment as meixuan and jonathan had brought up this issue when we were talking about this.

------ By Blogger Denyse, at October 28, 2007 at 6:17 PM

Another disadvantage if i do not take both groups would be that i could only see one group during CT period, and next year being your graduating year, there would be lots of admin, ie, testimonials and reports for your uni applications, that need to be written by CT. Hence, to faciliate all these i would need to be familiar with your learning progress and i wouldn't be able to give a real perspective if i do not teach you in econs.

Hey all,

am here just to relay mr leong's intentions in splitting the class up for econs lessons next year. the rational behind this is to allow both classes to learn at their own pace. He will be teaching the weaker students whilst the other class will be (man)-handled by mdm fok(i think).
However, due to the splitting of economics lessons there may(or most likely) result in our time tables being slightly more spaced out or longer, depending on how you see it. In other words, the economics tutorials may not be scheduled at the same time unlike maths. so that's the only drawback in my opinion.
If you feel strongly against the splitting of economics classes then do sms me before say saturday 6pm. I'll then let mr leong know.
---
FAQ
Q: Will mr leong continue to be our CT?
A: I actually dont know, but yes i think so.

Q: Why do we have to split classes up?
A: Mr leong finds that some of us are unable to cope with the pace in economics lessons so he'd like to segregate the class according to their aptitude for economics. In this way, both classes will be, as i've mentioned, able to learn at their own comfortable pace.

Q: If i end up in the "weaker" class, does it mean i'm stupid?
A: No silly! just study harder!

Q: Wont remaining at status quo allow the better generation of ideas and allow the 'weaker' student to learn from the better ones?
A: Well, it doesnt seem to work out this way as i observed and i certainly think it'd be better having two classes. We can still exchange our ideas/scripts/notes even then. we're still a class.
---
And lastly, as the CT rep of the class, i feel obliged to voice out my concern for the general slacking environment we have, unfortunately, came to cultivate (and i'm at fault too). I know you guys/girls can do it. ie, blur queen can anyhow whack and pass maths still! imagine if she put in a little effort into it (and perhaps stop cutting her own hair). in short, the year has passed, what's past is past. you and i know we've disappointed our teachers and all. just dont disappoint yourself and live to regret it (like i do now).
like what ben toh says, he'll let mr leong see the "other" side of him next year. i hope its for the better. by the way, i'm not directing this to anyone in class. we fall as a class, we progress as a class, and we're all mutually interdependent [see application of economics! useful alright...] if we men1 xin3 zi4 wen4 (okay i dont even know whether this idiom exists), i'm sure you all will agree that we have shown so much disrespect to all out STs and Mr Leong has had to bear the brunt of these in the entire year. i just wish that next year we'll come back more mature.

let's just bear this in mind okay! make yourself proud. and if you give up on yourself, no one else can help you. if you need someone to talk to or laugh or whatever, my phone's always switched on rain or shine.

cheers,
lilong

CLASS TEE- please design (:

dear class,

after one year together, it's finally time to make a class tee. (this sentence has no logic but hmm)

even though our class identity does not have to be built upon a tee, i'm sure we'd all like to have a common shirt that's exclusive to 07a12 right? [YES!]

so let's all participate in the making of our shirt! there were previous attempts in making the shirt but i guess everyone had been too preoccupied with other commitments to realise the dream(shirt).

if we dont make it now, we'll be unlikely to accomplish this task ever again in our 2 years here. [after OP, many ppl will be flying off at diff times.it'll then be hard to uphold democracy in making decisions. and in j2, well we'd like to mug more right? and when we come back to sch to mug we can wear our class tee! if we churn out the shirts by this year, we'll have lots of chances to wear it next year. so the bottomline is, our shirts should come to us fast (: ]

thus, you can start posting up tee shirt designs (to test the waters)! in addition, since not everyone checks the blog regularly, can designers pls print out your designs and pass to yp before 16october2007. we can vote on 16/10 since everyone in class will be present[getting back econs paper].

ANYONE and EVERYONE can contribute your designs and ideas! (: (: please do design! (you can remain annonymous)
** during 1st 3 months some ppl had designs for the class banner right? please consider bringing up those designs again for the class to vote!

may our shirt come true soon (:
jiayou! please (remind each other to) design!
